Public liability insurance for dj
Public liability insurance for mobile discos
General term for any liability coverage for claims brought against the insured by a third party or member of the public where they feel that they have suffered a loss or breakage as a result of your negligence (lack of care).
This can mean anything from someone tripping over your wire (
You have all seen the drunk people) and breaking their leg all the way to a speaker falling of its stand and smashing the venue's stage, and as i am sure you are all aware
"Accidents do happen."
Whats the cost of PLI for a moblie disco company?
The cost of DJ's PLI is actually not to bad it varys depending on area, equiptment, amount of work etc. But it is not bad and is most definetly worth it just in case!
Far by the cheapest company we have found is
Music Guard it is specifically for mobile disco insurance so keeps the costs down, its worth a look.
In an event that you are successfully sued by a third party your pli dj insurance will be able to pay the costs for the compensation that has been awarded against you and any legal costs that you have incurred as a result of defending your claim.
If you don't have public liability insurance then you will be stuck to pay the whole cost for the compensation, and with over £4.5 billion paid out in claims last year its a very worrying scenario. If you are unable to pay the compensation which has been awarded against you a court may try and pursue you for any assets you have i.e. your home, your cars and any other assets which you may have.
In this instance the Dj could be taken to court and sued for thousands of pounds. Even if it is established that the mobile disco company did not act negligently and subsequently no damages are awarded against them they could still have a large legal bill to pay.
Public liability insurance is designed so that in the event that you are pursed by a third party you will have the adequate financial backing to pay the cost of the claim.
Dj public liability insurance
Public liability insurance will not prevent claims from happening, it will however cover your business in the event that there is one. Public liability insurance will usually cover your business up to £2+ million, which should be an ample amount to fully protect your disco business.
Is public liability insurance for dj's compulsory by law?
Compulsory insurance means that you must have a minimum level of cover to operate legally. The greatest example of compulsory insurance is private motor insurance, the law says that in order for you to legally drive on the road you must have a minimum level of cover (typically third party only insurance).
How often do dj public liability insurance claims happen?
Public liability insurance claims are becoming more frequent due to two reasons:
Members of the public are becoming more aware of their rights and the law
Since the introduction of 'no win no fee' claims services people have found it even easier making claims against unsuspecting businesses.
In the United Kingdom last year there was £5.5 billion* paid out in liability insurance claims.
Do not risk your disco business going under due to not having the adequate insurance to fully protect your business.
PAT Portable Appliance Test for dj's
Mobile discos portable appliance testing
What is a PAT test?
A PAT test is an eletrical safety test for any item with a plug attached. Portable appliance testing of electrical items used for a professional purpose is compulsery with electrical safety acts. When an item has passed a portable appliance test a green pass sticker is placed on the appliance, the date when the item should be re-tested is written on the sticker. PAT tests should be carried out annually.
The same way a car needs to go through an MOT once a year, an electrical item requies a P.A.T once a year.
What equipment should be tested and why?
All equipment which uses a plug should be tested to include
CD Players
Mixers
Turntables
Amps
Radio Mics
Light Controllers / Chasers
EQ's
Cross-Overs
Effects Lights
Smoke Machines
Par Cans
Spot Lights
Extension Leads and i could go on but i wont:)
Please Note - All equipment for PAT testing must carry
1. The 'CE' mark or the 'BS Standard' mark
2. All leads & appliances must have British plugs only.
You are not required to test Speakers or speaker leads.
Apart from peace of mind knowing that equipment has been tested and deemed safe. Many venues, especially council owned venues such as Leisure Centre's no longer allow use of disco equipment which is not PAT tested. If you can not do the job as you are not PAT tested then it will go to your competitor who is. When taking a booking for a PAT tested venue's many disco's increase their price which you can justify to cover the cost of the testing.
How much does it cost?
Anywhere from £0.50 - £3.00 per item depending on the tester the best idea is to shop around.
